But one of the biggest game-changers isn’t in the gym — it’s on your plate.

Eating Right Isn’t Just About “Diet” — It’s About Fuel

Gymnastics is an explosive, high-energy sport. Every cartwheel, handspring, and routine on bars or beam requires powerful muscles, quick recovery, and sharp mental focus. The right foods give your body the nutrients it needs to build muscle, repair tissue, maintain energy, and stay injury-free.

Protein for muscle repair and growth (lean meats, eggs, Greek yogurt, beans).

Complex carbs for sustained energy (oats, sweet potatoes, whole grains, fruits).

Healthy fats for joint health and hormone balance (avocados, nuts, olive oil).

Vitamins & minerals from colorful veggies and fruits to support immunity and bone strength.

Eating to fuel exercise rather than comfort is key. Ice cream after a tough practice might feel good in the moment, but consistent nutritious choices help you train harder, recover faster, and perform at your best.

The Power of Eating Together as a Family

One of the most beautiful things I encourage is families eating meals together. It’s more than just food — it’s connection, teaching healthy habits, and building discipline. This tradition was a big part of our family’s gymnastics journey back in the Bowie, MD area.

When you sit down as a family:

Kids learn by example what balanced plates look like.

You can talk about the day, goals, and how food powers gymnastics progress.

It creates positive associations with healthy eating instead of stress or restriction.

It strengthens family bonds — which carries over to confidence and resilience in the gym.

In our busy world, shared meals might feel rare, but even a few nights a week make a huge difference. Turn off screens, share gratitude, and enjoy the moment.

Practical Tips for Gymnastics Families

Plan balanced plates — Half veggies/fruits, quarter protein, quarter carbs.

Prep snacks for before/after training (banana with peanut butter, yogurt with berries, turkey roll-ups).

Hydrate — Water is your best friend. Add fruit slices for flavor if needed.

Involve the kids — Let them help shop or prepare meals so they own their nutrition.

Progress, not perfection — Focus on fueling your body to feel strong and energetic.

At MGA Gymnastics, we don’t just coach skills — we support the whole athlete. Strong bodies start with smart choices at home.

Parents in Bowie, MD and surrounding areas — what’s one healthy change your family is working on this season? Drop it in the comments or tag us! Let’s build champions together — on and off the mats.

Train hard. Eat smart. Watch a men’s vault at the Olympics: the explosive run, the thunderous punch off the springboard, and the breathtaking flight through the air, followed by a rock-solid landing. It defies imagination. What the human brain and body can achieve together — mastering intricate skills that look impossible — is absolutely amazing.

Gymnastics is far more than a sport. It is a beautiful blend of strength, artistry, discipline, and personal growth that transforms both the athlete and everyone watching in awe.

The Physical Beauty of Gymnastics

There’s something magical about watching a gymnast perform a triple turn on beam with perfect balance and precision. They make it look effortless, yet behind every skill are countless hours of dedicated practice. Gymnastics builds a strong, capable, and graceful body that moves with control and confidence.

It showcases the human body at its finest — “fearfully and wonderfully made.” No other creature on Earth can combine power, flexibility, balance, and coordination quite like a gymnast. The brain remembers exactly which muscles to fire, while the body executes with split-second timing and elegance. Gymnastics fine-tunes every muscle group, creating harmony between mind and body that even the most advanced AI couldn’t replicate.

The Mental and Emotional Beauty of Gymnastics

Gymnastics trains the mind as much as the body. It develops incredible discipline, focus, and perseverance. That’s why gymnasts are often excellent students — hardworking, intelligent, and mentally tough. They learn to eat well, rest properly, and take care of their bodies.

One of the greatest lessons gymnastics teaches is resilience. You fall — sometimes from great heights and with real force — and you get back up. There are painful mistakes and humbling setbacks, but those moments build unbreakable character. Gymnasts learn there are no excuses. Success comes from personal responsibility, hard work, and the courage to try again.

And when it all comes together? When you hit that perfect routine after months of effort? The joy and pride are like nothing else. That genuine smile and feeling of accomplishment is a natural high that no drug or artificial reward could ever match.

Why I Encourage Every Parent to Get Their Kids in the Gym

I tell parents every day: you don’t have to be training the next Olympian. Gymnastics helps children become champions in life. Every small victory builds confidence. They grow stronger, learn to face failure, and discover they can achieve things they never thought possible.

The benefits go far beyond the gym. Gymnastics prepares kids for other sports and, more importantly, for the challenges of life. In a world that can feel crushing at times, gymnastics builds resilience, character, and joy.

My hope is that every child gets to experience the fun, the friendship, and the life-changing benefits that gymnastics brings.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13

#Gymnastics #BeautyOfGymnastics #CoachBrian #MGAGymnastics #StrengthAndGrace #BuildChampions #KidsInSports #FaithAndFitness #Resilience

MGA Gymnastics • Apopka, Florida • Coach Brian Keith Shrewsbury

Get Up and Move – Choose Life, Joy, and Forward Motion Today

https://www.mga-gymnastics.com/blog/get-up-and-move-choose-life-joy-and-forward-motion-today

https://www.mga-gymnastics.com/blog/get-up-and-move-choose-life-joy-and-forward-motion-today#comments

Uncategorized

Brian Keith ShrewsburyGet Up and Move – Choose Life, Joy, and Forward Motion TodayAre you dancing this morning? Have you turned on your favorite music with a real beat yet? If not, get up right now and do it. Turn that music on and see what happens. You’ll instantly feel better. Sit up on the side of the bed, plant your feet on the floor, and let your body start moving.

Tune into your Spotify free account and put on some 80s music — or whatever era brings back those memories of when your body felt strong, alive, and unstoppable. If it’s not 80s, I forgive you. Just play what lights you up.

No matter what’s weighing on you right now, interrupt it. If your mind is stuck in something negative, tell yourself, “I’ll come back to that drama later.” You’ll fool your brain into realizing it can set the battle aside for a minute. Next thing you know, that problem starts to lose its grip. You’ll even wonder why you were so worked up about it in the first place.

Dump all the stress from this week. Let go of the bad decisions, the things you thought would make you feel better but didn’t, and every lie that whispered your life isn’t going anywhere. Because it is moving — with or without your full approval. You’re on a timeline. You can’t step off it. Life keeps marching forward. So make the decision today to put into your life what you truly want. You do have the power.

I know, I know — you’re thinking, “If I don’t worry about all this, the world’s going to fall apart.” We all feel that way sometimes. But remember: about 175,000 people die every single day worldwide, and the planet keeps spinning. The sun still rises. The birds keep singing. And the bill collectors keep sending notices to people who are no longer here to pay them. (Gotcha, bill collectors — I left before you could get it all!)

My daily advice to myself is simple: Do something incredible today. It doesn’t have to be big. Just something that feels meaningful to you. In my life, that might mean building something, creating something, writing something, calling someone I love, or just dancing in my room until I feel alive again. I don’t need to climb Mount Everest to feel purpose. I can feel incredible sitting in a pile of ducks, hand-feeding them… or hanging out with my cows… or best of all, spending time with my grandkids and seeing my own children in their eyes and smiles.

Today is a good day to rest, reflect, and plan. Look around at what you already have. See where you are, where you want to go, and what you want to make happen next — whether that’s tonight, tomorrow, or next week.

I hope you have a deeply blessed day. Let the Spirit of the Lord flow through you. Get your engine running and your mind pointed in the right direction. If it drifts, don’t let it stay there long. Get up and get moving however you can. No quitters on this watch.

Uplifting Bible Verse
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10

A Parable About Life

A farmer had two sons. To one he gave five bags of seed, to the other three. The son with five bags complained it was too much work and left most of it in the barn. The son with three bags planted every seed with care, watered it daily, and trusted the rain and sun. At harvest time, the first son had almost nothing, while the second had overflowing barns and enough to share. The father said, “It is not how much you are given, but what you do with what you have that determines the abundance of your life.”

Recommended Books for Optimism & Momentum

• When we encourage our children to be on time, listen attentively, and work hard, we’re equipping them with essential life skills. And one of the best ways to develop discipline, strength, and resilience is through gymnastics.

Why Being on Time Matters:

Being on time teaches kids accountability and respect for others. It helps children understand the value of structure, whether in school, sports, or life. When kids arrive on time, they’re ready to learn, participate, and give their best effort.

Listening to Teachers and Working Hard:

Encouraging children to listen to their teachers cultivates respect, patience, and focus. This listening skill translates into working hard and mastering new skills, whether in academics or athletics.

Health, Fitness, Strength, and Flexibility:

Our ultimate goal is to raise healthy, strong, and flexible individuals. Gymnastics is an incredible way to build these qualities. It develops core strength, agility, balance, and flexibility—all of which are crucial for overall fitness.

Gymnastics as a Foundation for Other Sports:

For both boys and girls, gymnastics lays the groundwork for success in any sport. Boys who pursue football, soccer, baseball, or swimming gain an edge from the strength, coordination, and flexibility learned in gymnastics. It’s a hidden gem that builds agility and body awareness, essential for any athletic endeavor.

Conclusion:

By fostering punctuality, a strong work ethic, and a love for gymnastics, we equip our children for a lifetime of success in health, fitness, and beyond. Gymnastics is more than a sport—it’s a foundation for a lifetime of achievement. Let’s encourage both boys and girls to embrace the benefits of gymnastics and watch them soar.

#GymnasticsForLife #PunctualityMatters #HealthyKids #FitnessForAll #StrongAndFlexible #GymnasticsFoundation #BoysAndGirlsInSports #AthleteDevelopment

You Have to do the Work

https://www.mga-gymnastics.com/blog/you-have-to-do-the-work

https://www.mga-gymnastics.com/blog/you-have-to-do-the-work#comments

Article

You Have to Do the WorkBy Brian Keith Shrewsbury(Coach, Writer, Entrepreneur)If You Want the Glory, You Have to Do the WorkToo often, people expect others to fix things for them or to hold their hands through every challenge. But true accomplishment comes only to those who are willing to put in the effort themselves. If you seek medals and recognition, you must be ready to earn them.

For over forty years, my mission has been to propel kids and young adults beyond what they believed possible. I've seen students reach heights beyond what I could have imagined for them—and I've seen others fall short. One thing I’ve learned is that as soon as I stop pushing, many stop achieving. This reveals a hard truth: genuine growth depends on consistent effort and self-motivation. Sadly, experience is not always valued; some people feel threatened by it, rather than seeing it as a resource for growth.

There Is a Paradox at the Heart of Success and Failure

Perfectionists, those most afraid to fail, are often the ones who struggle the most. Meanwhile, the people unafraid of failure—the ones repeatedly told they cannot succeed—sometimes internalize those limitations, when, in fact, their willingness to try could set them free. I’m reminded of a famous experiment: a rat left alone in water drowns quickly, but a rat that is constantly pushed under fights harder and survives much longer.

Challenge and adversity can provoke reserves of determination we never knew we had.

Entitlement and Complacency Are the Chief Enemies of Progress

When we expect others to pave the way for us, or believe that we are owed success regardless of our efforts, we become lazy, arrogant, and entitled. The achievements we value most are those that required sacrifice and hard work. The teachers and coaches who challenge us the most—the ones we sometimes resist or dislike—are often the ones who teach us our most important lessons. Not through abuse, but by insisting we confront our limits, fall, fail, and rise again.

Growth comes from being challenged.

Real Love and Mentorship Are Not Always Gentle

To truly care for someone is to help them face discomfort, hardship, and even pain. It’s through falling, hurting, and enduring struggle that we truly learn and build character. Sometimes, experiencing the depths of difficulty is necessary before we find the strength and will to rise.

A Memorable Scene from Lean on Me Illustrates This Point

Principal Joe Clark, played by Morgan Freeman, confronts a student battling addiction, taking him to the school rooftop and telling him to jump if that's what he truly wanted—to force him to confront the reality of his choices. This moment of tough love awakened something in the student: the realization that he had the power to change his path.

Of course, I would never ask a student to jump off a roof—such an act is extreme and belongs only in Hollywood. My approach is to challenge students intellectually and emotionally, encouraging them to face difficult truths and learn from adversity while always safeguarding their well-being. The goal is to inspire growth, not to put anyone in harm’s way.

In Life, Challenge Is a Gift, Not a Curse

When we take risks and are willing to fail, we learn, adapt, and grow stronger. God challenges us so we can become resilient, humble, wise, and compassionate. He lets us feel pain and consequences—not to hurt us, but to help us grow. The people and experiences that test us the most deeply often care the most about our development, even if it doesn’t feel that way in the moment.

Ultimately, achievement, character, and wisdom are forged in the fire of challenge and struggle. If you desire greatness, embrace adversity, confront your failures, and commit to working for your rewards.
